Zojirushi SM-SA60 Stainless Vacuum Mug, 20 oz
Zojirushi
SM-SA60 Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Travel Mug, 20 oz
Confirmed PTFE interior in direct hot-drink contact: our methodology floors this at 9 regardless of the excellent insulation. Choose an uncoated stainless interior instead, such as a SlickSteel Zojirushi, a Stanley Classic, or a Hydro Flask.
A superbly insulated steel mug whose interior nonstick coating is PTFE, a fluoropolymer, confirmed by Zojirushi. Hot drinks sit directly on a PFAS-family coating, which floors this at a 9 under our methodology.
How this score breaks down
Strengths
- Best-in-class vacuum insulation
- Durable steel body
- Zojirushi discloses its coating chemistry publicly, which most brands do not
Trade-offs
- Interior nonstick coating is PTFE, a PFAS-family fluoropolymer, in direct hot drink contact
- Coating wear releases material into the drink path over the mug's life
- Plastic lid mechanism also sits in the drink path
Scored on our durable-goods method (durables-v1, 2026-07-04). How we rank →
What's inside
Vacuum insulated stainless steel body. Zojirushi confirms on its design blog that its nonstick interior coating is PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), applied as primer and topcoat. Zojirushi also makes SlickSteel models with an uncoated electropolished interior for buyers avoiding PTFE; the SM-SA is not one of them.
- Packaging
- Not stated
- Microplastics
- High concern pathway: hot liquid sits against a PTFE fluoropolymer coating that wears with use and washing. PFAS-family coatings in hot food or drink contact are the worst case in our rubric.

About Zojirushi
Zojirushi is the Japanese thermal specialist whose vacuum mugs lead every insulation test. The SM-SA series pairs that performance with a flip-open locking lid and a nonstick coated interior.
